That's it. My guess is, when CentOS 7 came out there was no POWER9 yet. Therefore: PPC64le = POWER8 PPC64be = POWER7 And since POWER9 is out, PPC64le is POWER 8 and above. My guess comes from the GCC corner. If you build for PPC64le, then for POWER8 and above. POWER7, for example, doesn't work (properly) in little endian mode. That's why be.
